Researchers at the Université Libre de Bruxelles have developed a new class of autonomous, self-healing and self-adapting robots that can physically merge their nervous systems, taking up different shapes and sizes as per the requirements of a task.

Marco Dorigo, co-author of the paper that describes these self-assembling machines, explains that the attribute facilitates better coordination between bots while retaining their self-organization benefits, notes Seeker.

The innovation sets the stage for the arrival of futuristic “design composable robotic units,” built to reshape themselves for multiple tasks rather than being confined to a particular stream, writes Design Boom.
