At least 25 people, including 23 students, were killed and 10 others injured after a fierce blaze broke out at an Islamic school in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

The victims were left trapped in the dormitory that has only one entrance and majority of the windows barred with grills, writes Reuters. More than 30 fire accidents have been reported in so-called “tahfiz” schools, where students memorize holy Quran.

According to the fire and rescue department, the blaze at the Tahfiz Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah is one of the country’s worst fire disasters in the past 20 years, highlighting the precarious state of safety measures at unregulated private schools, notes the BBC.
