Hurricane Irma, the most powerful tropical storm recorded ever over the Atlantic Ocean, swept through the Caribbean on Thursday, leaving at least nine people dead and wrecking almost everything as it passed through Puerto Rico.

The “potentially catastrophic” Category 5 storm, roaring with strong winds and heavy downpours, cut off power supplies to nearly three million people, devastating the small island of Barbuda to “barely habitable” extent, notes the BBC.

Irma, which is expected to strike Florida on Saturday or Sunday, will retain the intensity of at least a Category 4 storm, writes Reuters. To pile up the misery, two other storms in the region have strengthened to become hurricanes.
