San Francisco supervisor Jane Kim has launched a campaign, called the Jobs of the Future Fund, which aims to explore the feasibility of a statewide tax on “job-stealing” robots, an effort that marks the first administrative step towards compensating those workers who bear the brunt of automation.

The campaign website states that the revenue generated from “robot tax” would be channeled for education and retraining of displaced workers while a fraction would be invested in new industries, notes Seeker.

The concept of levying a tax on robots is drawn out from a Bill Gates interview in February, where the billionaire floated the idea as a solution to limit the impact of automation on humans, writes Wired.
