Artist and graphic designer Leanne Wijnsma is adding a physical dimension to tracking your data leaks. She has ideated a tiny device, called “The Smell of Data,” which connects to a smartphone, computer or tablet via Wi-Fi and emits a puff of pungent odor when the paired system is vulnerable to a possible data leak, like over an insecure web page or Wi-Fi.

The idea may sound “frivolous” but it underscores an important message about online security, notes Digital Trends.

Although the device is limited to a concept, for now, Wijnsma doesn’t rule out manufacturing it one day so as to make privacy breaches and data leaks more noticeable, writes The Verge.
