S. Korea, U.S. conduct joint drills amid high tensions

The U.S. and South Korea began their joint military drills on Monday, a development that’s certain to pour “gasoline on fire” since the North sees these annual military exercises as preparation for war.

The drills come at a time when war rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang has heated up over the last few days, with N. Korea threatening to fire intercontinental missiles near the U.S. territory of Guam, writes the BBC.

China and Russia have been urging a halt on joint military exercises even as the U.S. and S. Korea call their drills purely “defensive in nature,” Reuters
