Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a sleek and inexpensive system, known as the spectral transmission-reflectance-intensity (TRI)-Analyzer, which hooks up to any smartphone and performs a number of diagnostic tests with accuracy.

The economics and mobility of this technology make the device a valuable addition to the healthcare system in remote regions, especially in the underdeveloped countries, notes NBC News.

The technology is akin to moving a medical laboratory out of hospitals and handing it to people in desperate need of such fast and cheap healthcare services, notes Futurism.
