Amid escalated tensions after the U.S. lawmakers reached a deal for Senate’s nod to impose fresh sanctions on Russia, President Vladimir Putin has ordered Washington to cut back its diplomatic staff in Russia by 755 people.

The downsizing will bring the U.S. staff to 455, the same as Russia’s diplomatic officials in Washington, notes the BBC.

A State Department official described the move as “a regrettable and uncalled-for act,” adding that the U.S. is mulling retaliatory measures, writes Reuters. The development is a sign that Russia is no longer keen to spend more time on improving ties with the U.S., as was expected with the transition of power in Washington.
