Inspired by transpiration process taking place in the Amazon rainforest, Pratik Ghosh, a Royal College of Art (RCA) graduate has developed a plant-based water filtration system that simulates a mini biosphere, purifying home wastewater in addition to releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.

The system, named Drop by Drop, consists of a glass dome with a plant that carries out photosynthesis and releases water vapors that are condensed to obtain pure water, writes Inhabitat.

Although the filtration process is sluggish in this prototype, Ghosh believes that the system can be upscaled to filter 160 liters of water in 12 hours of daylight, notes Dezeen.
