Amid fierce protests by Palestinians and mounting international pressure, Israel on Thursday dismantled the entire security apparatus, recently put in place at Muslim entrances to the al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem's Old City.

The latest move to defuse political and religious tensions around the holy site came two days after Israel removed metal detectors and announced that it will deploy less obtrusive security infrastructure in the area, writes the BBC.

The holy site, sacred to both Muslims and Jews, has seen some of the worst bloodsheds in the region, with unrest often extending for several months and claiming scores of lives, notes Reuters.
