In world first, self-reliant boat sets off for 6 years

Jul 26, 2017, 8:31 AM EDT

Energy Observer, a self-sufficient catamaran powered by wind, sun, and hydrogen, set sail for a six-year journey around the world, presenting an example how nature’s energies can collaborate with those created by the society to combat climate change.

The effort draws inspiration from the success of Solar Impulse 2, a solar-powered aircraft that circumnavigated the globe last year, writes True Activist.

Instead of using hydrogen derived from fossil fuels, the boat will produce the gas by the electrolysis of ocean water thus ensuring an emissions-free glide, notes Inhabitat
