Drawing a leaf out of France’s book, the U.K. has decided to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2040 to cut down the rising levels of nitrogen oxide that adversely affects public health.

According to an estimate, poor air quality is not only a major environmental risk to public health in the U.K. but also dents productivity costing up to £2.7bn in a year, writes The Guardian.

Environmental activists have been demanding that the government should bring in diesel scrappage scheme in addition to setting up clean air zones that levy hefty charges on the most polluting vehicles, notes Independent.
