Miffed by global criticism for denying overseas treatment to its most prominent dissident, Liu Xiaobo, China responded by calling it an internal affair even as it faces fresh calls to release late activist’s wife, currently under house arrest.

Nobel Peace Prize winner, Liu, serving 11-year jail term for “subversion,” suffered multiple organ failures after the Chinese authorities refused to allow him to travel for treatment, writes the BBC.

The Nobel Committee, Britain, and Germany regretted Liu’s “premature” death and called on Beijing to transparently answer if the treatment was deliberately delayed. Amid global mourning, human rights agencies and Western governments have urged China to free Liu’s wife, Reuters.
