New York-based company Ecovative Design is spearheading a green initiative with its “Grow It Yourself” kit that lets users grow a wide variety of items, from lamps to packaging, using the vegetative part of fungus.

Friends Eben Bayer and Gavin McIntyre, who founded the company, say they chose mushrooms and fungi as these materials are nature’s recycler, which can be used to craft aesthetically appealing and green products that will passively return to earth without disturbing the environment, writes Digital Trends.

The “Grow It Yourself” initiative seeks to involve and empower the consumer for a greener growing process rather than just introducing eco-friendly manufacturing practices, notes The Verge.
