Photo-sensitive material has “spring in its steps”

A team of scientists at Eindhoven University of Technology and Kent State University have engineered a new polymer that walks and propels itself like a worm on being exposed to light. The polymer, touted as “world’s first material that converts light into walking,” could be handy for delivering small objects within inaccessible spaces.

The scientists created a device with this material and hauled objects heavier and lighter than the material itself, clocking a speed of about half a centimeter per second, notes New Atlas.

The continual undulating motion of the arrangement is due to the fact that one section of the strip-shaped polymer expands while the other contracts in reaction to light, writes Phys.org.
