Days after German Chancellor Angela Merkel took a U-turn, giving a go-ahead for a free vote over whether to legalize same-sex marriages, the country’s parliament passed a bill granting gay and lesbian couples full rights, including adoption.

The bill was backed by 393 lawmakers while 226 opposed it, notes the BBC. Political analysts opine that Merkel, who personally voted against the reform, has deprived the opponents of a major issue as the country heads for the general election on September 24.

Earlier, key allies of Merkel’s party had set the precondition of LGBT reforms to forge an alliance, notes The Guardian.
