Sweden’s top prosecutor, Marianne Ny, announced on Friday that she has decided to drop a rape investigation against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, marking an end to a seven-year legal faceoff.

Assange, who has taken refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012, has always denied the allegations, calling them a plot to extradite him to the U.S. for leaking a trove of secret cables related to Iraq and Afghanistan wars, writes The Telegraph.

The development comes after the Ecuador government wrote a letter to Sweden, criticizing the “serious failures” and “lack of initiative” in concluding the investigation against Assange, notes The Guardian.
