A California-based company, Made In Space, is working on a new technology called ‘Archinaut,’ which would allow 3D printing and assembly of large structures in space. The system, designed to accept commands from Earth, would eliminate launch limitations, in addition to taking some of the tasks conventionally performed by spacewalkers.

As the technology allows manufacturing and integration of parts in orbit, in future the scientists won’t be required to launch heavy structures from Earth, notes Space.

Made In Space, which has been working on the project for last six months, bagged NASA funding of $20 million and is set to launch an Archinaut demonstration mission to Earth orbit in 2018, writes Seeker.
