In Norway, where about 2,000 tons of spent batteries are generated every year, supermarket chain Coop Norway, has installed three battery recycling machines that accept all types of used household batteries and in exchange return discount coupons to buy new ones.

The machine, developed by Refind Technologies, was unveiled on Earth Day and offers a discount of 1 krone ($ 0.12) for every returned battery, notes Tree Hugger.

If Norway adopts the law, making it necessary for vendors to take back used batteries, Coop Norway may install these machines at all of its stores, writes The New York Times.
