Scientists at the Salk Institute in San Diego have developed an experimental drug that boosted the endurance of couch-potato mice, turning them into gritty athletes. The drug, touted as “exercise in a pill,” holds great promise for obese or physically disabled people, unable to exercise.

By activating a protein that regulates the genes triggered during exercise, the drug tricks the body into burning fat like a trained athlete, writes Science News.

Such a pill could deliver the benefits of physical training with a tablet and opens a range of therapeutic applications from increasing fat burning in overweight people to improving patient’s fitness post surgery, notes Independent.
