After a month-long spell of intense fighting, a U.S.-backed alliance of Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighters drove out Islamic State militants from the key city of Tabqa and also regained control of a strategic dam east of Raqqa on Wednesday.

The takeover of Tabqa is a significant development as it wipes out almost all IS-held urban settlements on the eastern road to Raqqa, writes Al Jazeera.

On Monday, the U.S. President Donald Trump approved a plan to directly ship arms to the Kurdish Peoples' Protection Units (YPG), a part of Syrian Democratic Forces fighting jihadist militants in Syria, notes Reuters.
