4D printing tech creates self-assembling objects

Apr 14, 2017, 3:17 AM EDT

A new 4D printing technology is creating shape-shifting objects that can self-assemble themselves over time when exposed to stimuli such as heat, moisture or light. The technology holds promise for developing structures that can adapt to their changing environment, taking a form that best suits their function and stability.

The study published in “Science Advances” illustrates the benefits of 4D printing technique, which requires almost eight times less material and eight times less time to develop the same structure made by 3D printing process, writes 3D Printing Industry.

The potential applications of the technology include temperature-activated cardiac stents, drug capsules and flat-pack furniture, which would respond to changes in temperature or other stimuli within minutes, notes New Scientist.
