According to a recent study, researchers in China have developed a prototype battery that can power itself using atmospheric nitrogen. The “proof-of-concept” battery could be a game-changer in the field of renewable energy as Nitrogen gas, constituting about 78 percent of the air, is abundantly available everywhere on Earth.

Xin-Bo Zhang, study author and a professor at Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, says the new design has overcome key challenges that previously restricted the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into a power source for batteries, writes ResearchGate.

The reaction mechanism in the prototype battery doesn’t require expensive catalysts and electrolytes while giving decent yields under mild conditions, notes TechXplore. The work on a nitrogen fixation battery system is still in infancy but the latest development provides a fundamental and technological progress.
