Presenting a fine example of biomimicry, a team of engineers in Austria has devised what it describes as “the world’s first all-in-one solar system,” shaped like a sunflower that turns with the sun throughout the day. Named the Smartflower POP, the device is essentially a plug and play home appliance with solar panels that bloom automatically with the first rays of the sun.
The photovoltaic system is based on dual-axle sun tracking technology, which keeps it “petals” rotating in the direction of the sun, optimizing its power generation capacity, notes Design Boom.
The system fares better over conventional rooftop units in its ability to achieve fairly constant production rate during the course of the day, reports Tree Hugger. The innovative design enables the Smartflower POP to harvest greater amounts of solar energy daily, with the company claiming that the power output to be sufficient for annual consumption of an average European household.
