In an interview with British and German newspapers, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump described Chancellor Angela Merkel’s “open-door” refugee policy as a “catastrophic mistake.” While outlining the details of his foreign policy goals, Trump added that his focus lies on securing America’s borders and carrying out “smart trade” rather than free trade.

Referring to a recent attack in Berlin in which 12 people were killed after an asylum seeker plowed a lorry through the Christmas market, Trump said that allowing illegal migrants into Germany can have serious consequences, which the country has already begun to face, writes The Guardian.

Trump linked the migrant issue to the Brexit referendum in the U.K., saying that if the E.U. countries were not forced to taken in all of the refugees, Britain would not have left the bloc, reports the BBC.
